You've probably experienced this frustration two products with similar ingredient lists, yet one seems to work better on your skin than the other. Ingredient identity and concentration matter but so does the formulation carrying that ingredient to where it needs to act. That combination of factors is often called "delivery."
Delivery is one part of what makes a formulation effective not a replacement for correct ingredient identity, concentration, or professional guidance.
Understanding Your Skin's Natural Barriers
Your skin's outer layer, the stratum corneum, is built to keep things out including many of the ingredients in your skincare. It's often compared to a brick wall, with skin cells as the bricks and lipids as the mortar. Some ingredients applied to the surface don't reach the living layers beneath.
The Penetration Challenge
A commonly cited guideline in dermal delivery science is that molecules smaller than roughly 500 Daltons cross the skin barrier more easily though this is a general rule of thumb, not a strict cutoff that applies identically to every molecule or formulation. Compounds like hyaluronic acid or peptides are typically much larger, which is one reason formulators think carefully about vehicle and delivery system, not ingredient choice alone.
Delivery approaches used across the industry include:
- Liposomal/vesicular encapsulation- carrying ingredients in lipid-based particles
- Particle-size reduction - helping ingredients move through the barrier more readily
- Penetration enhancers - vehicle components that support ingredient uptake
- Controlled-release systems - designed to release an ingredient gradually rather than all at once
How to Evaluate Products
Ingredient lists tell you what is in a product. Formulation and delivery technology are part of understanding how well it may work though neither replaces finished-product testing or professional advice for medical concerns.
Some general things worth asking about a product:
- Is there any explanation of how the formulation is designed to help ingredients reach the skin, beyond just listing them?
- Is there evidence (even general, published research) behind the delivery approach used?
- Are the claimed results realistic gradual improvement over weeks is far more typical than overnight transformation?
Be cautious of products that promise instant results, rely purely on high ingredient percentages with no discussion of formulation, or make guarantees about penetration and outcomes without supporting data.
Monoskin's Approach to Delivery
Monoskin's Cetosome® technology (US Patent US 9,084,818 B2) is a delivery platform used in some of our formulations, built around cetylated fatty ester complexes designed to help carry active ingredients through the skin barrier.
A few important clarifications:
- Not every Monoskin product uses Cetosome® technology, and the products that do differ in their active ingredients, concentrations, and intended use.
- A patent describes a delivery mechanism. It is not, by itself, proof that every finished product built on the platform has been independently tested for clinical efficacy that depends on formulation-specific studies.
- We do not use blanket release-duration or delivery-depth claims (for example, fixed multi-hour timelines) unless they're backed by testing for that specific finished product.

When evaluating any skincare brand's claims, it's reasonable to look for:
- Some explanation of delivery mechanism - not just an ingredient list.
- Realistic timelines - most well-formulated actives show gradual improvement over weeks, not overnight change.
- Clear separation of product categories - cosmetic products, physician-directed actives, and prescription medicines are not interchangeable, and should be labelled as such.
- Caution around absolute claims - "clinically proven," "scientifically proven results," or guaranteed penetration should be backed by finished-product evidence, not general ingredient or patent research alone.
